Rehabilitative Therapist Specialty

As a newly rising medical subject, rehabilitation has been developing 20 years or so in our country, while it has been developing in the developed countries for more than 60 years. However, it shows the tendency of rapid growth in recent years. The main object of rehabilitation is to revive the physical, mental and social functions of people with disability, with senile disease or chronic functional impairment. According to the present facts of domestic rehabilitation, our country needs at least 30,000 physiatrists, and 300,000 rehabilitation therapists. So the specialized subject has a notable feature. At present, it is urgent for our country to explore a personnel training mode according to the requirements of the development of our rehabilitation and to transform the simple biology mode into the biology-psychology-society mode. Consequently, developing the education and nurturing the experts in rehabilitative treatment are oriented to the objective situations as well as the requirement of the medical education projects.
We founded the first rehabilitation medicine college in 1999 and began to recruit students majoring in rehabilitative treatment in 2001. Approved by Ministry of Education of Heilongjiang Province and registered in Ministry of Education of the State in 2004, the college turned vocational teaching to undergraduate teaching, enrolling students in the whole country. Our college trains students associating with Sapporo Medical University Hospital and their teachers come to teach, which shows the characteristics of our college. Many teachers have gained successful experiences and dramatic effects in teaching. We enrolled 69 students majoring in the undergraduate course in 2004. There are 17 full-time teachers in Rehabilitation Teaching and Research Section, including 5 full professors, 2 associate professors , 1 special appointed professors, 1 part-time professor,1 doctor still learning  and 2 masters still learning. Our faculties are from those of Rehabilitation College, and our facilities in the relative teaching and research section are shared. The area of teaching lab is 268 square meters, in which there are four various kinds of functional labs. The cost of all the equipments adds up to 678,120 RMB.
Many of the teachers undertake a part-time social duty in this field, taking an active part in domestic and foreign academic meetings, who are invited to give lectures throughout the world. Backbone teachers can make the academic communication in English, Japanese and Russian proficiently. We send 1 to 2 teachers to go another institution for the advanced study for 3 to 6 months, or to attend the national training class, purposefully and designedly every year. We also send 1 teacher abroad to gain the advanced training and study. All the practice makes the teachers and students have the chance to get the latest information, learn and master the leading-edge theory and technology, and it also promotes innovation education and quality education actively.
According to the rehabilitation therapist development program of Ministry of Public Health, we draw on the experience from the foreign countries, especially Japan, as well as other colleges in our country. Moreover, we base ourselves on the basic condition and feature. According to the social demands, we make a systematic argument and scientific analysis. We proceed from the strategic development and sustainable development view, making it clear to the character of cultivating students, making the training aim and the courses of four-year undergraduates majoring in rehabilitation.
Undergraduates majoring in rehabilitation can undertake common rehabilitation and therapy tasks, are qualified for children rehabilitation and therapy tasks and can go in for physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. The courses also include humanities, psychology, pedagogy, Evidence-Based medicine, sociology, phoronomics and rehabilitation engineering.
