School of Foreign Languages 

    Foreign Languages College (FLC) of Jiamusi University (JU) was founded in 1994 and located in the beautiful and enchanting First Campus of JU. FLC has been adhering to the idea of "cherishing talents, pursuing truth and innovation" and making full use of the educational and teaching resources of JU, a comprehensive university, to offer outstanding integrated talents of foreign languages and talents of foreign-related tourism management to the development of regional economy and society. 
    At present, FLC has over 1700 full-time undergraduates and more than 30 postgraduates. There are six specialties: English Specialty, Normal English Education Specialty, Japanese Specialty, Russian Specialty, Tourism Management Specialty and Korean Specialty. The Research Office of Foreign Languages is under FLC and Specialty of Japanese Language and Literature is authorized to grant students master's degrees. Japanese Specialty is a provincial key specialty and enrolls students taking China's college-entrance examination of China in the first batch. Japanese Audio-visual Speaking is a provincial elite course. Fundamental Japanese, Integrated Russian and Travel Agency Management are JU elite courses. CFL has 114 members on the staff, of which, more than 30 are professors or associate professors; 54 teachers with master's degrees and 5 with doctor's degrees having finished their studies inside or outside China; 1 being "Provincial Elite Teacher"; 2 being "JU Elite Teacher"; 60% of the teachers having master's degrees and 70% of them having further studying or visiting-scholar experiences both inside and outside China.
    CFL has been perfecting its feature of "Language + Orientations" to cultivate applied talents of foreign languages and foreign-related talents of tourism management, who are competent in language communication and possess professional skills capable of working in the fields of foreign affairs and foreign trade, tourism, culture and education and scientific research. Graduates from CFL have been popular with their employers for their wider-range knowledge, stronger ability of practice and their spirits of diligence, practicality and innovation.
    Sticking to its idea of "existing with teaching and strengthening with scientific research", teachers of FLC have undertaken and finished 1 international cooperation project, 30 province-level and ministry-level scientific research projects. Ten projects have been awarded province-level scientific research achievements. They have published 18 textbooks and monographs, more than 200 papers in famous international and domestic journals. Among which, 12 papers have been published in international journal and 20-odd papers in core journals of China. 
    In the new situation, FLC will endeavor to build itself into a cradle of educating high-quality talents of foreign languages and talents of foreign-related tourism management with its excellent teaching resources, advanced ideas and modern educational technologies.
   
                                Brief Introduction to the English Specialty

    With a distinguished history of 30 years, the English Specialty is listed as one of the key Specialties of Jiamusi University. It has a well-organized team of teachers with outstanding academic, teaching, and research achievements, 20% with senior professional titles and 40% with academic credentials above master's degree. The structure of the faculty's learning-origins, academic qualifications and professional titles is reasonable which provides strength for its further development. There are two specialties in this department: The English Education and The Applied English. The English department aims at cultivating students to be highly qualified English talents of all-round development with researching ability, polished professional knowledge, and excellent foreign language skills£¬who are able to work in the fields of translating, researching, teaching as well as managing. The Department emphasizes the development of the students' listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating abilities. The goal of English Education is to cultivate teaching talents in the specialty of English with solid foundations and high teaching level for technological academy schools and middle and primary schools. While the Applied English aims at cultivating talents with language-using ability and professional skills for foreign affairs, foreign trade, foreign-funded enterprises and tourism.

                          Brief Introduction of Department of Oriental Languages

    The Department of Oriental Languages is presently composed of two     Specialties: Japanese and Korean. Japanese specialty was founded in 1994, and developed into undergraduate education in 1998. Japanese Specialty was awarded Heilongjiang provincial key specialty in 2005 and granted the right to empower the master degree¡ªJapanese Language and Literature, by the Ministry of Education in the same year. The master program began to recruit graduate students in 2007£¬majoring the following four research directions: Language Culture and Cross-culture Communication, Language Culture and Japanese Teaching, Translation Theory and Practice and Japanese Linguistics. Korean Specialty was established in 2009.
    Department of Oriental Languages has a well-organized team of 17 teachers, among which there is 1 Provincial Teaching Master, 3 professor and 3 associate professors, which occupy 35% of the staff. 94% of the teachers have master's or doctor's degree: 3 with doctor's degree; 13 with master's degree. There are about 60% of the staff furthering their study abroad or being visiting-scholars. The scientific research of the teaching staff has made significant achievements with 32 teaching and scientific research programs, among which 2 programs are international cooperation and 6 programs are province-level and ministry-level. 9 programs have won awards. 3 monographs and 5 teaching materials have been printed. 77 academic papers have been published in all levels of international and domestic academic publications.
    Japanese specialty aims to cultivate advanced Japanese talents and ensure the all-round development of students by cultivating both their mind and body, who can be qualified for Japanese teaching, research, translation and management work in the field of language research, culture and foreign affairs. Based on Japanese teaching, the undergraduates have the following elective courses: Economics and Trade, Management, Tourism, foreign-related accounting, etc
    Korean Specialty aims to cultivate advanced interdisciplinary talent with solid language basis and broad knowledge, who can be qualified for teaching, research, translation and management in the field of foreign affairs, economics and trade, culture, press and publication, education, research and tourism.
After over 10 years' development, external exchange has made great achievements. The young teachers and the excellent students can be detailed for overseas study in sister universities of Japan periodically. Japanese Friendly personnel and friendship association have presented Japanese major with large number of books and equipments, at the same time, the students who are excellent and have difficulties in life can get scholarships awarded by two Japanese organizations.

              Brief Introduction to the Russian Department

    Founded in 1987£¬the Russian Department takes "to educate the person as well as impart knowledge" as educational ideas and aims at cultivating students to be highly qualified and inter-disciplinary talents with excellent foreign language skills. Undergraduates from the department have proved to be with a good command of the Russian language and skilled at handling modernized office equipment and with certain knowledge of trade, tourism and secretary, all of which qualifies the students for translator and interpreter in the communication between China and Russia. The students also have the opportunity to get higher education abroad at public expense every year. The department has a well-organized team of teachers with outstanding academic, teaching, and research achievements. At present, three-fourths of the teachers have got a Ph.D. or Master's degree. In recent years, constant achievements have been made in academic research, which has laid a firm foundation for the department's long-term development.
 
            Brief Introduction to the Tourism Management Specialty

    The tourism Management Specialty (TMS) was founded in 1999, and it was promoted to undergraduate major in 2003. It is oriented to the policy of "cultivating the tourism talents for the development of regional economy, with employment as orientation."  In the teaching process, we have been adhering to the objective of educating students with excellence in foreign language proficiency as well as in other academic subjects.  Our essential aim is to develop versatile undergraduates with the knowledge of tourism, foreign languages and managerial expertise. Equipped with a strong team of staff, the department offers a fairly complete curriculum of regular subjects concerned with economics and management.
    The Tourism Department has 10 teachers on the faculty, 60%of which have master's or doctor's degree. In recent years, prominent accomplishments have been achieved in teaching and research.
